Sin Doesn’t Make Us Bad, It Makes Us Dead.

The Resurrected Life

Spiritually speaking, sin doesn’t make you bad, it makes you dead.

The good news of the Gospel isn’t that Jesus makes you good, it’s that He makes you ALIVE!

How? Not by you trying hard or following all the rules perfectly. No, the Gospel brings life when you trust the central promise that Jesus died in your place to give you eternal life with Him.

That faith changes you. I mean think about it, dead people and living people don’t engage in the same activities. That would be weird.

No, when you’ve been made alive in Jesus, you begin to live differently.

As Paul writes here in Colossians, you put off old ways and put on new ways because you aren’t dead anymore, you’re alive.

And yet too often, we may find ourselves doing what we used to do and being where we used to be before our rising. We take naps in our old coffins.

But Jesus’ Rising calls us to wake up and live! One way we can begin is simply by doing what you’re doing right now.

Meditating on the profound simplicity of the Gospel.

If the Rising is just an event that you occasionally look back on, you’ll never find the power to walk it out. But when the Rising becomes so real that it’s not behind you, but in front of you, and

CHRIST’S SPIRIT IS inside of you, that’s where the power lies to really live!

Look up! After all, we’re rising.

God’s Word

Colossians 3:1‭-‬11 GNB

You have been raised to life with Christ, so set your hearts on the things that are in heaven, where Christ sits on his throne at the right-hand side of God. Keep your minds fixed on things there, not on things here on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Your real life is Christ and when he appears, then you too will appear with him and share his glory!

You must put to death, then, the earthly desires at work in you, such as sexual immorality, indecency, lust, evil passions, and greed (for greed is a form of idolatry).

Because of such things God’s anger will come upon those who do not obey him.

At one time you yourselves used to live according to such desires, when your life was dominated by them.

But now you must get rid of all these things: anger, passion, and hateful feelings. No insults or obscene talk must ever come from your lips. Do not lie to one another, for you have taken off the old self with its habits and have put on the new self.

This is the new being which God, its Creator, is constantly renewing in his own image, in order to bring you to a full knowledge of himself.

As a result, there is no longer any distinction between Gentiles and Jews, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarians, savages, slaves, and free, but Christ is all, Christ is in all.
Colossians 3:1‭-‬11 GNB

Classic Christian Rock song, “Come Alive” by Ruscha:

We Can’t Earn God’s Love

The Lord is kind to people and he forgives them. He is slow to get angry and his love always continues. He knows that we are weak humans. He remembers that he used dust to make us.
Psalms 103:8‭, ‬14 EASY

Love the Lord your God with all of your mind and your thoughts. Make him the most important person in your lives. Think about him every day.
Deuteronomy 6:5 EASY

Unfailing Love

The consequences of sin—our own or someone else’s— can make us feel as though God’s compassion and mercy are far off.

At times we feel as if His anger has been unleashed upon us alone; left with the feeling that His unfailing love for us is seemingly out of reach.

According to God’s Word our behavior is not at the center of God’s focus.

For far too long we have thought that for God to show us His compassion, mercy and love, we have to earn it.

That is never going to happen.

Taking God at His Word, regardless of our feelings, we need to hold on to the fact that God couldn’t love us any more or any less than He already does.

God’s mercy isn’t linked to a measuring stick. He’s not some hot-tempered, irrational killjoy ready to ruin our lives with unquenchable anger.

God’s love for us is not based on our performance,

but it is reserved for those of us who have been adopted into His family through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:4-5).

He instructs us, His children, to show Him reverence and seek to love Him with all our being as He chooses to keep His covenant and remembers His promises from everlasting to everlasting (Psalm 103:17-18; Deuteronomy 6:5).

Life is more about Him and less about us.

God is always compassionate and merciful, not easily angered and unfailing in love.

God is always who He says He is and will always do what He says He will do.

Closing Prayer:

God, I know I’m not perfect, but I’m thankful You don’t look at me any differently because of my mistakes. Thank You for having compassion for me, and for being willing to help me learn and grow. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

God’s Word:

I say to myself, ‘Praise the Lord!’ Everything that is in me, praise his holy name! I say to myself, ‘Praise the Lord!’ Never forget all the good things that he has done for you! He forgives all my sins. He makes me well again when I am ill. He saves me from the deep hole of death’s power. He always loves me and he is kind to me. That is how he blesses me so much! He gives me many good things for my life here. So I become strong again, with the strength of a young eagle. The Lord does what is right and fair. He helps poor people who receive pain from others. He showed Moses how he works to help his people. He showed the Israelites the great things that he could do. The Lord is kind to people and he forgives them. He is slow to get angry and his love always continues. He will not always tell us that we are wrong. He will not always continue to be angry. We should receive much punishment for the bad things that we do. But the Lord does not punish us so much. For people who worship him, his special love is very great. How far is the sky above the earth? His love is greater than that! How far is the east from the west? The Lord has taken our sins farther away than that! He no longer says that we are guilty. As a father is kind to his children, the Lord is kind to us. He is kind to people who worship him. He knows that we are weak humans. He remembers that he used dust to make us. A person’s life is like grass that quickly dies. He is strong only for a short time, like wild flowers in a field. A hot wind blows over flowers and they die! Nobody even remembers where they were growing. But the special love of the Lord will always be with people who worship him. He promises to be kind to their children’s children for ever. He continues to love people who obey his covenant. Those are the people who obey his laws. The Lord rules from his throne in heaven. He rules as king over everything. You who are the Lord’s angels, you strong angels who do what he tells you to do, praise the Lord! All of you who belong to his armies in heaven, his servants who do what he wants, praise the Lord! Yes, everything that the Lord has made, in all the places that he rules over, praise the Lord! I say to myself, ‘Praise the Lord!’
Psalms 103:1‭-‬22 EASY

https://bible.com/bible/2079/psa.103.1-22.EASY

Before God made the world, he chose us to be his people because of Christ. He chose us so that we would please him. Because we belong to Christ, God accepts us as completely good. This shows how much he loves us. Long ago, he already decided to accept us into his family as his children, because of Jesus Christ. He chose us to belong to him because it made him very happy.
