Holy Is His Name (The Lord’s payer/7 Dimensional Relationship)

Not long ago I did a post inspired by I just finished day 1 of the @YouVersion Plan “7 Dimensional Relationship As A Believer” taking a closer look at just the very first few words of the prayer Jesus taught in Matt 6…”our Father”. Now I’m looking at the next few words, “Holy is Your name.”

As I compared translations I found the following:

…MATTHEW 6:9 AMP (Amplified) “Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name…(http://bible.com/1588/mat.6.9.AMP) The New Living Translation reads, “may your name be kept holy.” (Matthew 6:9 NLT) The Common English Bible words it this way, “uphold the holiness of your name.”(Matthew 6:9 CEB) The “Good News Bible” uses the phrasing, “May your holy name be honoured” (Matthew 6:9 GNB)

As I make this prayer Jesus taught us personal I think upon His name and ask Him to remind all of us to treasure His name, honor it, and ask Him & all He is to remain seperated, holy, sanctified (set apart) to us.

Too often I’ve used the expression, “Oh my God” and I realize that I am not saying it in the context of prayer or praise, I am just using His name as if it is a meaningless expression. Some are even bothered when others say, “Oh my gosh” because they say it is a form of God’s name or slang for God. I don’t believe that but I know personally I’ve literally used His name and not in prayer but simply as an expression. I do not say, “Christ!”  Or “Jesus!” Out of the context of praying to Him…often I’ll shout, “CRIME!” or “CRUMB!”.

When it comes to expressing “curse words” I remember in my teen years I’d shout, “Fart!”,which to some was just as bad as another 4 letter “F” word, known now as “the ‘F’-bomb”.

I know my earthly father is proud that he doesn’t uses the typical offensive words most people use, and yet, I pointed out to him he will use the name of Jesus when his favorite baseball team loses or makes an era. We all use interjections, some verbal expression, when we stub a toe or hit a finger with a hammer. We all pick up ways to proclaim how we feel when surprized, frustrated, mad or hurt.

I’m not so sure that God is so easily offended by simple words we use; however,

He did make it clear that He didn’t want His name used in vein. (Ex. 20:7).

God made this very clear and then in the New Testament we are instructed to stay away from offensive language and filthy talk…Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. (Ephesians 4:29 NLT)

The words we use to express ourselves may be more offensive to some than to others but my main focus isn’t on pleasing people and making sure I don’t use certain words because they deem those particular words ‘right or wrong’. My focus is on pleasing God and not offending Him

He made it clear,

“You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.” Exodus 20:7 NLT

The Holy Spirit (God Himself) convicts each and every one of us individually from the inside out and we must remember that no sin is greater than another. Sin is sin and Christ is the judge. We will always have self apointed judges and juries (self righteous people) who will try to choke us out with legalism and hefty laws and commands far beyond what God requires but regardless of those people we must seek Christ and follow Him. If we remain sensitive to Him and strive to honor His name He will guid us and give us the tongue control He wants us to have (see the book of James).

As we use words He will condone or convict us as to what is acceptable to Him, letting us know when we need to repent, recant or simply respond without offending Him. Once we realize this I think it makes a big difference in the conscious choices we make in our language. Our main concern should be Him, not other people (mere men & women) and what they like or don’t like.

“For the Lord your God is the God of gods and Lord of Lords. He is the great God, the mighty and awesome God, who shows no partiality and cannot be bribed. You must fear the Lord your God and worship him and cling to him. Your oaths must be in his name alone. He alone is your God, the only one who is worthy of your praise, the one who has done these mighty miracles that you have seen with your own eyes. Deuteronomy 10:17‭, ‬20‭-‬21 NLT

You must worship no other gods, for the Lord , whose very name is Jealous, is a God who is jealous about his relationship with youExodus 34:14 NLT

“So remember this and keep it firmly in mind: The Lord is God both in heaven and on earth, and there is no other. Deuteronomy 4:39 NLT

His name alone can heal and at His name every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.

“Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9‭-‬11 NLT

Let them praise your great and awesome name. Your name is holy! Psalms 99:3 NLT

The Lord is my strength and my song; he has given me victory. This is my God, and I will praise him— my father’s God, and I will exalt him! The Lord is a warrior; Yahweh is his name! Exodus 15:2‭-‬3 NLT

Blessed be the name of the Lord now and forever. Everywhere—from east to west— praise the name of the Lord. Psalms 113:2‭-‬3 NLT

Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe. The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven. This shows that the Son is far greater than the angels, just as the name God gave him is greater than their names. Hebrews 1:1‭-‬4 NLT

I pray, our Father in Heaven, may your name be kept holy.

Extra note: As the Scriptures say, “No one is righteous— not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” “Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave. Their tongues are filled with lies.” “Snake venom drips from their lips.” “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” “They rush to commit murder. Destruction and misery always follow them. They don’t know where to find peace.” “They have no fear of God at all.” (Romans 3:10‭-‬18 NLT)

May my language and the words I use be used to help not hurt or curse others and when I am frustrated, angry or excited may the words I use to express myself not be offensive to God. May I not use His name unless I am pleading to Him in prayer or praising Him.

As Jesus was speaking, one of the Pharisees invited him home for a meal. So he went in and took his place at the table.  His host was amazed to see that he sat down to eat without first performing the hand-washing ceremony required by Jewish custom. Then the Lord said to him, “You Pharisees are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy—full of greed and wickedness!  Fools! Didn’t God make the inside as well as the outside?  So clean the inside by giving gifts to the poor, and you will be clean all over. (Luke 11:37‭-‬41 NLT)

http://bible.com/116/luk.11.37-41.NLT

As God cleans inside we will outwardly express His glory and lift up His name.
