My Kid, His Children

Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.
Proverbs 22:6 NLT

I was just able to visit my 4 children (Kyri, Olivia,  Madi & Abbey) while at my nephew’s wedding.

It is always good to see them & have time together. Although we were there for Cody & Marrisa (my nephew & his new bride) we were still able to be with each other & see two families merge into one by way of marriage.

I recall when I was a child when my friends & peers saw two people “in love”, or even as much as holding hands, we’d break out into sing-song using the two people’s names like,

Cody & Marrisa sitting in a tree,

K I S S I N G!

First comes Love then comes marriage,

Then comes a baby in a baby carriage ! ! !

It’s funny how we are as children. Things are a little more simpler. Kids are not always a result of marriage but we associated the order of having a crush on someone with not only joining in marriage but making babies.

My oldest child, Kyri, is teaching middle school children that are the same age as her oldest sister Olivia. She’s very familiar with how innocent and brutal honest kids can be. The older we get the more we think we know it all and yet we are always still learning, or should be at least.

As we all “grow up” we learn lessons, many times the hard way (personal experiences) but we also see things modeled for us. We may even, indirectly or subconsciously, mimic behavior we grew up with or purposefully live the opposite.

I would like to think & I personally pray that my kids will mimic the good examples I’ve set & live in opposition to the bad examples I’ve shown in my poor judgment of character & decision.

I heard a Christian brother say, ” we are not all God’s children.”  But I dont’t agree. I believe we are all God’s children, it is just that some are not obedient children. We all have the same Creator & the same Savior but it is a personal decision to make Him our Lord, regardless of our heritage. It’s up to us to have a tight relationship with our Heavenly Father & let His Holy Spirit live & take over our lives as Master.

If God is important & acknowledged by our parents the Scriptures tell us that will be something we will return to also in our adulthood.

This Proverb is directed to parents. Giving instruction but also a promise.

Today’s verse:

Train up a child in the way he should go [teaching him to seek God’s wisdom and will for his abilities and talents], Even when he is old he will not depart from it. PROVERBS 22:6 AMP

This Proverb goes right along with

Eph. 6:4 & II Tim. 3:15

Fathers, do not irritate and provoke your children to anger [do not exasperate them to resentment], but rear them [tenderly] in the training and discipline and the counsel and admonition of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4 AMPC

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger [do not exasperate them to the point of resentment with demands that are trivial or unreasonable or humiliating or abusive; nor by showing favoritism or indifference to any of them], but bring them up [tenderly, with lovingkindness] in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. EPHESIANS 6:4 AMP

I have to ask myself, “Do I love them, my kids, as God loves me? Do I show it, even in my absence from them? Do I point them to seek God’s wisdom, not my own foolishness? “

Paul wrote to young Timothy,

and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:15‭-‬17 NIV

You’ve been a good apprentice to me, a part of my teaching, my manner of life, direction, faith, steadiness, love, patience, troubles, sufferings—suffering along with me in all the grief I had to put up with in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. And you also well know that God rescued me! Anyone who wants to live all out for Christ is in for a lot of trouble; there’s no getting around it.

Unscrupulous con men will continue to exploit the faith. They’re as deceived as the people they lead astray.

As long as they are out there, things can only get worse. But don’t let it faze you. Stick with what you learned and believed, sure of the integrity of your teachers

—why, you took in the sacred Scriptures with your mother’s milk! There’s nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way.

Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us. 2 Timothy 3:10‭-‬17 MSG

I must always, for as long as I live, point my kids & those around me to Christ and even when they are grown adults themselves; even after I am gone from their sight, that seed planted, will remain.

Scripture backs it.

Measuring Up

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
Philippians 4:8 NLT

Thought for today on measuring up:

We don’t, nor can we, measure up. Our righteousness is like minstrel clothes compared to God (that is Scriptural).

The Lord is our righteousness, the only righteousness we have is His presence in us.

So, I fixed my thoughts on Him, not myself,  not others or what others thing.

It is a moment by moment process.

Extinguish nor Distinguish

Verse of the day, look, compare translations –

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.
John 1:5 NLT

The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. John 1:5 NASB

The Light shines on in the darkness, and the darkness did not understand it or overpower it or appropriate it or absorb it [and is unreceptive to it]. JOHN 1:5 AMP

As we look at this verse & consider “The darkness” (the world immersed in sin & in conflict with God’s purity) We see that “it” (darkness, world affairs) not only can’t stop “The light” (Christ) but it also can’t accept (comprehend) Him.

Just like physical darkness is overpowered by light so also Spiritual light, when shed on falsehood, the dark lies can not appropriate or absorb it. Darkness is unreceptive to The Light.

So Christ, not of this world, not only extinguish darkness, darkness (uncertainty & doubt) does not and can not set Christ apart from all the falsehood & prophets who also come around.

He is Holy, separated & given distinction above & beyond all other philosophy. He creates a relationship, not another religion made by man that measures our righteousness by what we can and can’t do but fully on what He has done for us.

Look at the definition of distinguish:

  1. recognize or treat (someone or something) as different.

“the child is perfectly capable of distinguishing reality from fantasy”

synonyms: differentiatetell apart, discriminate between, tell the difference between

    “distinguishing reality from fantasy”

    • perceive or point out a difference.

“bees are unable to distinguish between red, black, and various grays”

    • manage to discern (something barely perceptible).

“it was too dark to distinguish anything more than their vague shapes”

    • The only way we can be separated from the world is to let Christ’s righteousness come alive in us. Letting His Holy Spirit come in & be part of us will help us (make us) distinguish between the lies & truth about who God is & what Christ has done for us.

    • Once we do that & continue to get into Him & let Him get into us we also become more & more like Him.

“Metephores” be with you

My 13 year old daughter  (Olivia) attends middle school as a student and my oldest daughter  (Kyri) teaches middle school students. They probably both know so much more than I do regarding grammar and the English language.

Yesterday, during a video chat, my 13 year old notice the shirt I had on and asked if it was a “Star Wars” shirt? I clarified, “Actually, it looks like it but rather than saying, ‘may the force be with you’, it says, ‘may the Lord be with you.’ On the back is 2 Thess 3:16

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you his peace at all times and in every situation. The Lord be with you all.

2 Thessalonians 3:16 NLT

Olivia said her language arts teacher has a shirt that says, “Metephores be with you!”

Today’s verse of the day, and the surrounding Scripture went along well with all this. Here is Ecclesiastes 12:

Don’t let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator.

Honor him in your youth before you grow old and say, “Life is not pleasant anymore.”

Remember him before the light of the sun, moon, and stars is dim to your old eyes, and rain clouds continually darken your sky.

Remember him before your legs—the guards of your house—start to tremble; and before your shoulders—the strong men—stoop.

Remember him before your teeth—your few remaining servants—stop grinding; and before your eyes—the women looking through the windows—see dimly.

Remember him before the door to life’s opportunities is closed and the sound of work fades.

Now you rise at the first chirping of the birds, but then all their sounds will grow faint.

Remember him before you become fearful of falling and worry about danger in the streets; before your hair turns white like an almond tree in bloom, and you drag along without energy like a dying grasshopper, and the caperberry no longer inspires sexual desire.

Remember him before you near the grave, your everlasting home, when the mourners will weep at your funeral.

Yes, remember your Creator now while you are young, before the silver cord of life snaps and the golden bowl is broken.

Don’t wait until the water jar is smashed at the spring and the pulley is broken at the well. For then the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it

“Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless.” Keep this in mind: The Teacher was considered wise, and he taught the people everything he knew. He listened carefully to many proverbs, studying and classifying them.

The Teacher sought to find just the right words to express truths clearly.

The words of the wise are like cattle prods—painful but helpful.

Their collected sayings are like a nail-studded stick with which a shepherd drives the sheep.

But, my child, let me give you some further advice:

Be careful, for writing books is endless, and much study wears you out.

That’s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty.

God will judge us for everything we do, including every secret thing, whether good or bad.
Ecclesiastes 12:1‭-‬14 NLT

What a blessing to have God’s intervention & interactions with us through His Word, His Son & His Spirit.

May we take Him at His Word and continue to develop the relationship with Him that He wants to have with us.

Honor and enjoy your Creator while you’re still young, Before the years take their toll and your vigor wanes, Before your vision dims and the world blurs And the winter years keep you close to the fire. In old age, your body no longer serves you so well. Muscles slacken, grip weakens, joints stiffen. The shades are pulled down on the world. You can’t come and go at will. Things grind to a halt. The hum of the household fades away. You are wakened now by bird-song. Hikes to the mountains are a thing of the past. Even a stroll down the road has its terrors. Your hair turns apple-blossom white, Adorning a fragile and impotent matchstick body. Yes, you’re well on your way to eternal rest, While your friends make plans for your funeral. Life, lovely while it lasts, is soon over.

Life as we know it, precious and beautiful, ends. The body is put back in the same ground it came from. The spirit returns to God, who first breathed it.

It’s all smoke, nothing but smoke. The Quester says that everything’s smoke. Besides being wise himself, the Quester also taught others knowledge. He weighed, examined, and arranged many proverbs. The Quester did his best to find the right words and write the plain truth. The words of the wise prod us to live well. They’re like nails hammered home, holding life together. They are given by God, the one Shepherd. But regarding anything beyond this, dear friend, go easy. There’s no end to the publishing of books, and constant study wears you out so you’re no good for anything else.

The last and final word is this: Fear God. Do what he tells you. And that’s it. Eventually God will bring everything that we do out into the open and judge it according to its hidden intent, whether it’s good or evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:1‭-‬14 MSG)

I’ve done several post about the eternal life we can know when we know & trust Jesus.

Believe It or Not

I just finished day 5 of the @YouVersion Plan Hearing The Voice Of God. Check it out here:

For me the whole point was that we can depend on God & take Him at His Word.

Life can be so confusing & when trying to follow Him some people forget that regardless of how we feel or what we think God wants if it doesn’t line up with His Word it’s just not His will.

God is the same yesterday,  today & forever so if some decision we make is contrary to the lifestyle God wants from us as described in His Word then we are not in His will.

The devotional above mentions how people say, “God said it, I believe it, that settles it.” But they clarify the truth that whether we believe it or not God still said it & that settles it.

As Christ’s Holy Spirit comes into our lives He gives us a desire to go to His Word as The Source of truth. Jesus is the living breathing Word, what an honor & privilege to have His Word.

Now, it’s not only a matter of getting into His Word but letting His Word gets into us.

Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.

Luke 21:33 NLT

Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.

1 John 4:1 NLT
