Myth busting & reality – the Scriptural Pictorial of Angels
Although we don’t see them there is documented evidence that God sends angels to earth.
I’m no ‘angel expert’. Years ago I did a study on angels & I’ve reviewed & studied other’s research and more on the subject since then.
No where in the Bible have I found that people become angels when they die.
No where have I seen God describe angels as babies with wings in His Word (The Bible).
No where in the Bible have I even read angels described as having two wing.
I have seen documentation in The Bible of other heavenly beings like cherubs, seraphim & other creatures but every time the Bible mentions “angels” (that I’ve noted) they seem to be men and there is ussually something that causes some kind of fear in those seeing them because they almost always tell the human they are visiting, “don’t be afraid.”
I have noted that in Hebrews 13:2 we are told “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. Hebrews 13:2 NIV (http://bible.com/111/heb.13.2.NIV)
We are also warned in 2 Corinthians 11:14 that even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14 ESV). So we must be careful not to get caught up or preoccupied with the thought of angels nor offer prayer to them rather than to God almighty who is above and over all.
The study of angels is fascinating but angels are not to be worshipped, that is for Christ alone. The Bible does give evidence that angels not only exist but are sent by God to help us. We may never fully understand or know much about angels but we can find comfort that they are servants of God and God uses them to minister to us as they ministered to Christ…after Jesus was tempted then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him (Matthew 4:11 ESV).
I won’t get into the deep theology or images that may be completely an artists imagination and whether they are Biblical correct or pure myth but I just find reassurance that angels, whatever they are like, how ever they look God sends them…
Exodus 23:20-22 -“See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. Pay attention to him and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him. If you listen carefully to what he says and do all that I say, I will be an enemy to your enemies and will oppose those who oppose you (Exodus 23:20-22 NIV).
Psalm 91:11-12 -For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. Psalm 91:11-12 NIV
I love to draw angels and picture them as warriors with big Hugh wings…
(I didn’t draw this one)
And I guess there is nothing really wrong with that. It may not be accurate according to what the Bible tells us angels are like in reality and I love the book
Frank E. Peretti goes into fictional detail of what we can’t see but uses imagination to portray God’s intervention. (Piercing The Darkness is the 2nd in that series of his – both are great!)
So, praise God from whom all blessing flow, seen and unseen, realized and unrecognized HE does so much more than we’ll ever know.
In Christ, Beetle
