🔹 start with 4 questions 🔹
☆Who is Jesus?
☆Who is Jesus  to you?
☆Do you or Why do you believe Him?
☆What difference does it make?

Introduction: Critical questions to consider
1. Why study this book now?
Remember why God inspired John to write it (Jn. 20:30-31 below).

2. Why was it written initially?
🔸 External circumstances time period was  90 A.D. (After Christ’s work here on earth in the flesh) New Testament completed now all the way to Revelation (all written now, record of eyewitnesses New Testament , especially the book of John give an accurate account of Jesus,  an “Authorized Biography”)
🔸 Internal explanation
John 20:30-31 circle the words “signs”, “believe”,  “life”
(thru book of John we see 7 signs & 7 interviews)

3. What parallel exists today?
🔸External circumstances – Pluralism
🔸Internal explanation – Spiritual erosion (people taking other people’s word for it rather than look for themselves)

4. How do we discover the “real Jesus” today?
(Read the book, don’t wait for the movie)

Authors intent is still the same today, to see signs, believe,  enjoy life in Him.
3 Questions to ask yourself when you read a Bible text:

⚪What it say? (Observation)

🔵What mean? (Interpretation)

🔴What it mean to me? (Application)

Read passage several times.
1st just read (observations).
2nd time really look, look deeper  (Interpretation).
3rd time commitment to accept what God is saying to you (applications)

Here is John 1:1-18 (1st part we are going to look at & break down).
⚪Just read it over
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.  The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.  (John -the baptizer testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’ ”) Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.

For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known
(Known- meaning to explain)

Pg. 2 of Chip’s notes
(To catch up with audio just look at the following quickly and pick up where Chip says “4th
I also marked it with a 🚩 below)

1 st we have asked
– Three questions to ask whenever you study God’s Word:
⚪1. What does it say?
🔵2. What does it mean?
🔴3. What does it mean to me?
(Answer question you have in your life today – see what Jesus did & how He lived life, how He got through this life -then follow his example )

2nd we have
– Read the passage to get the “Big Picture,” or general idea:
🔸 Verses 1 – 18: Introduces the Word’s origin, identity, and
🔸 Verses 19 – 28: Reveals John the Baptist’s identity and
🔸Verses 29 – 34: John the Baptist reveals Jesus’ mission and
🔸Verses 35 – 51: Introduces us to Jesus’ first 5 disciples.

John 1
Page 3 of Chip’s notes-

3rd we
– Make specific _observations about one section of the chapter at a time:
i.e. The “Logos” (see below) section:
🔸The Word was before time began John 1:1
🔸 The Word is God and was with God John 1:1
🔸The Word created everything John 1:3
🔸The Word is the source of life John 1:4
🔸This life is the light of all mankind John 1:4
🔸The Word is Jesus John 1:14
🔸Jesus reveals what God is like John 1:18

🚩4th (marker 03:36 of 2nd Audio)
– Play spiritual “Jeopardy” with the text to clarify what _relevant __ questions God’s truth is answering:
1. Who exactly are you and where did you come from?
Answer: John 1:1 – 5 (“logos” meaning the living breathing word).

2. Not to be disrespectful, but can anyone corroborate your story: these fantastic claims?
Answer: John 1:6-9
Note answers verses 1-9 gives to that question,
Can anyone corroborate your story?
Who can testify to these fantastic claims?
John the Baptist, also
Isaiah prophecy fulfilled
And St. John that wrote this
gives documentation of Christ not only being diffenent from religious leaders but displaying the characteristics of His Father, showing love, mercy, grace -living it out day to day.

Page 4 of Chip’s notes
Then ask Jesus,  the living word-
3. When you look back on your earthly ministry, what was your greatest disappointment?
Your greatest joy?
Answer: John 1: 10 – 13

4. Why did you choose to come to earth the way you did? What was your purpose or
Answer: John 1: 14 – 18
Verse 18The Message translation says, “The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood.”
Look up in Verse 9 then down I’m verse18
The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. No one has ever seen God. But the unique One, who is himself God, is near to the Father’s heart. He has revealed God to us.
John 1:9, 18 NLT
So, Why did God choose to come to earth the way he did?
What was his purpose or
So the Word became human and made his home among us. He was full of unfailing love and faithfulness. And we have seen his glory, the glory of the Father’s one and only Son. For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ.
John 1:14, 17 NLT
[Up until Christ came no one was able to see God face to face -now in John’s writing we read the eyewitnesses account of seeing God in human form]
NOTE: 🔸also in John 1:29-34 John gives us Jesus’ mission
It gets really personal here. Remember God sent John to proclaim who Jesus was (Jn 1:6) and after His resurrection He told all those who had come to “know” Him to tell the world.

For me, I take this really serious & can’t help but fall deeper & deeper in love with Christ & share that with the world as I throw HIS WORD ON WHO HE IS out into cyberspace for the world to see, read, hear & hopefully to come to believe.

truth to your personal life, circumstance, and relationships. After reading the book of St.John, even the 1st few verses, ask yourself…

🔸What difference does it make?
🔸How will I “by faith” apply this to my life today, this week?
🔸Who might help me?
🔸Who might God want me to help?

What does John Chapter 2 __say_ ? (Recall earlier 3 Questions everytime you study 1st what does it say, 2nd what does it mean 3rd what does it mean to me?)
🔸Context: The first five disciples follow Him. John 1:35 – 51 (following Christ)
🔸Structure: Two specific sections – the Wedding and the Whipping
🔸 Observations: The Wedding John 2:1-11 (you jot down these things you observe )
1. The host runs out of wine.
2. Jesus’ mother requests help.
3. Jesus instructs the servants, water supernaturally turns into wine.
4. Only the disciples and servants are aware of a miracle.
5. This miracle is Jesus’ first “sign.”
6. The disciples see Jesus in a new light and believe.

They “walked” with Him, got to know & act like Him.

🔸Observations: The Whipping John 2: 12-25

What does John Chapter 2 _______mean_______ ? Interpretation
🔸  Questions to consider: The Wedding
1. Why did Jesus launch His movement here?

Notes Chip shares to answer on audio,  described Jewish wedding traditions,  environment,  length,
Invite, customs, hospitality,
(Wedding stand for union of two becoming one)
Wedding could  last as long as 7 days.
Hang out 7 days after sometimes.
Mid. Week
Not part of “wedding party” but still part of the feast.
Everyone brought wine and or food.
Big issue to run out of wine.

2. What are we to make of the conversation with His mother?

literal rendering -‘your consern & mine are not the same’. CHRIST had a Clear path & purpose.
‘It is not my hour/my hour has not come’ -reference to same saying & wording at His death. (Uses phrase 5 times in book of John)  His mom here was conserned about ediqites & pleasing people He had a deeper purpose.  But watch how He takes this situation to get across a deeper meaning & convey a deeper truth lesson…
(Also consider metephorically the final wedding feast Christ the groom the church being the bride).

3. What significance is there in the six stone jars?
Consider culture & custom.
Washing purification, holy.
20 to 30 gal. Each. Jewish purification. 7 perfect #. 6 # rep. Unfinished.
Jars External religious rites -unfinished
150 gal. Of wine given –

Think use of water from jars help outer purification.
Jesus’ changes the water in those jars into wine…

4. What underlying spiritual implications are we to grasp?
Joy & wine are metephorically connected.
Jesus is able to take the watered down truth of what they used as a ritual to ‘wash’ (as a sacrament) & changed it into wine they can take into their bodies & have lasting joy.
Jesus is the Only one who can do more that a sacriment, symbolically washing, a ritual to show you are being washed, He goes beyond that & is able to fill us with Joy if we ‘drink Him in’.

Starts with a lil’ review-
This occurred 2x

You can’t have the new until old is replaced. Must address the old that has be corrupted.

External religion were the jars Jesus goes deeper.

Chip goes onto Whipping but comes back to this section…

5. How did this miracle position, or launch, His ministry with the disciples?

Wedding reference to Christ being groom & believers being bride, never running out (wine not running out after Jesus turns water into the wine represents eternal joy).

✔Personally or in small group you can really chew on this but look at facts, culture  (Their culture when & where it took place not our culture) how their weddings were (length, importance) wine rep. Joy, what water & jars used for (cerimony of cleansing). 6 jars shows represents incomplete, just the beginning of ministry, more to come, this is earthly wedding feast Heavenly wedding will be complete groom is Jesus bride is true believers.

🔸Questions to consider: The Whipping
1. Why did Jesus go to the feast in Jerusalem?
2. Why is John’s account different from Matthew, Mark, and Luke’s?
3. Why does Jesus react so passionately and violently at the Temple?
4. What are the underlying spiritual implications of this section?
5. How did this event shape Jesus’ relationship with the –
🔸Religious leaders?
🔸His disciples?
🔸 The multitudes?

Summary #1: Jesus breaks through the barriers. John 4:1-9 (NIV) Here is the Scripture picture :
1 The Pharisees heard that He was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John
2 although, in fact, it was not Jesus who baptized, but His disciples.
3 When the Lord learned of this, He left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.
4 Now he ◾had to go◾ through Samaria.
5 So He came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given
to his son Joseph.
6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as He was from the journey, sat down by the well.
It was about the sixth hour.
7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give Me a

9 The Samaritan woman said to Him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How
can You ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

Summary #2: Jesus offers to quench her deepest thirst. John 4:10-15 (NIV)
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink,
you would have asked Him and He would have given you living water.”
11 “Sir,” the woman said, “You have nothing to draw with and the well is deep (100 feet). Where can
You get this living water?
12 Are You greater than our father Jacob (note: grammatically sarcastic), who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as
did also his sons and his flocks and herds?”
13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty (note: desire, unsatisfied) again,
14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water (note:metiforic) I give them
will become in them a spring of water welling up to  (note change of topic) ‘eternal’ life.”
15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to
keep coming here to draw water.”

Summary #3: Jesus helps her face the truth in love. John 4:16-21 (NIV)
16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17 “I have no husband,” she replied. Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you
have no husband.
18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband.
What you have just said is quite true.”
19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that You are a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we
must worship is in Jerusalem.”
21 Jesus declared, “Believe Me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father
neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
🔸Life Lesson #3: Honesty with ___yourself ____and with God is the prerequisite
to an authentic relationship with Christ.

Page 3 of notes…
Summary #4: Jesus explains how true worship works. John 4:22-26 (NIV)
22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for
salvation is from the Jews.
23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father
in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
24 God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.”
25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When He comes, He
will explain everything to us.”
26 Then Jesus declared, “I who speak to you am He.”
🔸 Life Lesson #4: True worship is a matter of ___honest___ _______relationship___, not
religious systems.

How do you see God?

He was fully human & fully God.

External performance  (religion)

Summary #5: Jesus allows her “wounds” to be leveraged to
bring others to faith in Himself.
John 4:27-42 (NIV)

27 Just then His disciples returned and were surprised to find Him talking with a woman. But
no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are You talking with her?”
28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people,
29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?”
30 They came out of the town and made their way toward Him.
31 Meanwhile His disciples urged Him, “Rabbi, eat something.”
32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”
33 Then His disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought Him food?” (nite:food, what really matters,  drive, satisfaction)
34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.

35 Do you not say, ‘Four months more and then the harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and
look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
36 Even now the reaper draws his wages, even now he harvests the crop for eternal life, so
that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. (note:metephorically)
37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true.
38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and
you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”

(Now note what is happening)

39 Many of the Samaritans from that town “believed” in Him because of the woman’s
testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.”
40 So when the Samaritans came to Him, they urged Him to stay with them, and He stayed
two days.
41 And because of His words many more became believers.
42 They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we
have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”

He can do only what He sees His Father doing, because whatever the Father does the
Son also does.
20 For the Father loves the Son and shows Him all He does. Yes, to your amazement,
He will show Him even greater things than these.
21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to
whom He is pleased to give it.
22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, ( they would go to O.T. only God can judge)
23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the
Son does not honor the Father, who sent Him.

Judgment – in Christ we will find no condemnation  (Jn. 3:17).
💠main point of all this is to believe in Christ & to personally invite Him in, allow Him to come in.💠

Personal experience shared, importance of Christ fellowship, relation to others & living testimony.

The notes pick up with the audio again in Verse 26 but if the listener has not accepted Christ as their Sovereign God & final judge the whole 10 part audio series is for nothing.

Point #2 – Jesus explains His relationship to the world:
🔸He is our ___God__: John 5:24-26
Verse 24 “I tell you the truth, whoever hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has
eternal life and will not be condemned but has crossed over from death to life.
25 I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the
voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.
26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son also to have life in
Himself. (Look at Daniel 7)
🔸He is our __judge____: John 5:27-30
27 And He has given Him authority to judge because He is the Son of Man.
28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will
hear His voice
29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who
have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.

(All about a living faith)

30 By Myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and My judgment is just, for I seek
not to please Myself but Him who sent Me.

The Validation: Three testimonies (follow in Bibles)
John 5:31-47 NIV
31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true.  There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is true.

“You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth.  Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved.

John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.
36 “I have testimony weightier than that of John.
For the works that the Father has given me to finish—the very works (miracle) that I am doing—testify that the Father has sent me.

(Note: witnesses John, miracles  and…)

And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form,  nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent.

You study  the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,  yet you refuse to come to me to have life.    “I do not accept glory from human beings,  but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.  I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him.

Verse 44 How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God  ?    (Memorize & better yet internalize this -not trying to please people but to really seek the heavenly Father.)

“But do not think I will accuse you before the Father.

(Truth, then grace, then more truth & more grace)

Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set.  If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me.  But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?”
John 5:31-47 NIV

The Message: There’s hope for the hopeless .

Discussion Questions:
1. What was so “strange” about this story? Why? (Consider us, comfortably  Numb & comfort zone we are in…every body has something in this world that seem hopeless, no sign of hope)

2. Are there times in our lives when we really don’t want to help?
Why do you think this is so? (comfort, control, fear of unknown)

3. Why did Jesus purposely heal on the Sabbath?

4. What three things occur in a person’s life when they hear and believe? (see John 5:24)

5. How does Christ’s role as “Judge” impact how you live your daily life?
