Kicking against the pricks

The material and gathering of scripture for this post took many years, other people (both good and bad ones) and a lot of spiritual growing pains, trial and annoyances. i’m glad i finally got it together and wrote this post. Just when i thought i had it all together more annoyance but also blessing as well as lessons keep coming to me.
My daughter Kyri showed me this

picture. It goes perfect with the way i have felt at times in my life .
Also, A friend gave me some words of advice that taught me a thing or two about acceptance. This goes well with that post as well.
In an attempt to keep this short i am going to just plant some seeds here and leave it up to all of you reading to dig as much, as little or not at all.
I encourage you to Jump around as you read….

I look at what the apostle Paul wrote in

2 Co. 12:1-21 (a thorn in his flesh, a messenger of satan, to torment him).
I look at Acts 9:5 where Paul is kicked off his high horse and hears Jesus say, “You are persecuting me, kicking against the goads or pricks. (May see clearer in N.K.J.V.)
I look at Acts 26:14 where Paul describes his encounter and words he heard directly from the risen and already ascended Lord Jesus Christ Himself. He called Paul by name (at the time his name was Saul), “It is hard for you to kick against the goads.”
Other translations….
Goads or pricks, whatever word you want to use that describes someone who is opposing you or going against your grain, a thorn in your side, a hard pill to swallow, a real… something or someone that you find your self butting heads with. Maybe they are butting heads with you.
Let us not take this out of context, let’s really get a grip on this.
HERE in the scripture those people, ‘the pricks’, to Saul were those people called “Christian” or refered to as people who are part of, “The Way.”
He was against them and wanted to kill them because they took a bold stand for the Messiah and Saul didn’t believe the Messiah was the man Jesus Christ.
Those people, followers of Jesus, were blasphemous, not living like Saul thought they should be living.
Am i hitting home yet, more importantly is this Scripture sinking in, the real meaning here and what really happen, what God is really saying and talking about…is it sinking in?
So Saul was kicking against religious people he thought were not living like he thought they should be living and Jesus said,
STOP, get off your high horse.
as a matter of fact; here, let me help you! And with a bright bash of light He made Saul literally blind and yet helped him see more clearly than ever before in his life.
This is where that acceptance comes in and we have to realize there is a plank in our own eye, not just a thorn in our side.
Jesus will take that plank out but he is more than likely going to keep the thorn there and not remove it (read on, below the next picture, jump straight there if you want).
We are told we should first take the plank out of our own eye and then we can help those with splinters in theirs but ‘helping others with their splinter sometimes turns into us playing the judge or fruit inspector and thinking we have the right to say what is wrong and right for others.
Let’s keeping in mind, HE (CHRIST) is the judge and we have to wait for that day when He will take care of everything. HE will separate the sheep from the goat. HE will separate the wheat from the weeds. HE will know what fish are fresh and which are rotten; and HE will pick the good fruit and remove the dead branches.
“So don’t get ahead of the Master and jump to conclusions with your judgments before all the evidence is in. When he comes, he will bring out in the open and place in evidence all kinds of things we never even dreamed of – inner motives and purposes and prayers. Only then will any one of us get to hear the “Well done!” of God.” 1st Co. 4:5 (The Message Translation)
“Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God.” 1st Co 4:5 (NIV)
read whatever translation you want Christ says the same thing.
Christians, if you’re going to

grow you gotta let go.
Let Christ bust you out, free you from this institutional way of life.
Stop playing the corporate game.
Stop legalistic ritualism.
You don’t go to church you be the church, inside and out.
God can weed your garden, he can remove the rocks, he can soften your soil but we got to let HIM (Mt. 13 ‘read all about it’ or check out the portrayal below -but don’t wait for the movie, read the book, it is so much better).

He is not going to weed the Church (people who you see on Sunday morning). He is not going to separate the weeds from the wheat yet. (He tells us this, look again at Matt. 13 ‘read all about it’).
Again,
He will remove the plank from your eye but may leave the thorn in your side for a reason. You are personally going to have to seek HIM for answers as to why and regardless of why just come to acceptance.
Many people have asked me, “Why are there so many hypocrites in Church?” Isn’t the answer obvious? They couldn’t stand against something with their actions if they weren’t standing up in Church singing the opposite of their actions.
Some have told me in my 20 some years in the ministry in one way or another, “I don’t go to Church because too many people there are just unpleasant to be around.” Church meetings can breed bitterness and heretics but they can also feed your soul the bread of life. If the pastor himself doesn’t do it someone else there probably will and if it seems like no one around you is feeding on the word, crack open your Bible and start eating. Feeding yourself or better yet, let God provide and you just do your part, open your mouth/mind/heart.
It is time to show unbelievers, as well as believers who left the gather why you are going to a place they can’t stand, Church, show them why you go to His house, why you meet up with others who believe. Share what you are eating. Feed the sheep, it is not just the pastor’s job. Show them you are not like some of His disobedient children that have driven them away. You are a member of that family but you’re not like all the other kids. You’re attendance could be God’s way of leading someone in a closer walk with Him, even if others in that Church don’t seem to get it.
Stand out like a healed finger even while the thumb may be sore.
Don’t stand out like a sore thumb, get healed if you’re bitter. Don’t spread that bitterness that builds up over the little things. Sure the thumb may be sore but there are four other fingers that are not and those fingers are on a hand that is still working. You may feel some of the pain from the thumb that is black and blue but the other fingers don’t become black and blue also. Sure we all know “one rotten apple spoils the whole bunch church but only if the other apples spend all their time next to that rotten one. If you’ve tried and ya just can’t take it anymore then step back, put on the brakes brakes, Lie down. Come apart before you fall apart. Separate yourself is what Jesus says.
If all else fails and you are dieing and your spiritual growth is being stunted you may need to go to another gathering of believers, a different congregation. Another church. However, don’t keep attending out of some superstitious loyalty or religious obligation, please. Then you just become part of the bitter problem. Either get healed and see things clearly, change or leave because the Holy Spirit lets you know, it’s okay (jump down the page and read what’s near the next picture)
go ahead if you like, no one is grading you on this
you don’t have to read this in any order.
Let’s help each other and help those who have somehow in some way been shot with “friendly fire”; those who have been strangled or even choked out by a weed.
We’ve all been shot before.
We still need to carry on in Christ and in the battle. Reach out to someone, maybe even another prick and pray with them. The Lord don’t need to remove them from your life. HIS grace is sufficient. You may find it necessary to remove yourself from certain situations, people, places things but nothing can separate you from Christ but YOU, your stubbornness, you’re bitterness, your pain that you feel someone else planted in you or laid on you, that thorn in your side.
You can leave HIM, but HE will never leave you and don’t confuse you leaving the gathering of HIS body (Church) with leaving Him. Get with some believers, real believers, you may find them in church, you might, and if so find them and don’t forsake gather with them and being part of HIS body in some way. It may not look like a Church to some people but gather with some true, real Christian (believers) over a bond fire, at a coffee shop, in a library, at the beach, in a warehouse or storeroom is what Jesus wants. It is really all about us sticking together rather than getting off by ourselves like a lost sheep where a wolf would just love to single us out and pick us off.
Don’t just go to church BE the church, whatever Christ wants that to be like for you. Be salt, out of the shaker as a friend of mine said. Be light in the alleys of darkness. Be a participating part of His body, no longer paralyzed or sick with gangrene. No longer like a bump on a log but a living branch that is connected to the vine.
So in the mean time your going to have to

kick against the pricks. As long as you are in this world it is much like living in a jungle. Every Church, congregation, you get involved with is going to have some of those dead branches, angry mongers and monsters. We are going to have to deal with wolves in sheep clothing. We must learn to love the goats that are mixed in with the sheep.
Every congregation, every denomination, every ‘church’ yes, everyone of them. None of them are exempt because they are people too, they are human, they have faults. They have weaknesses. We all do.
(want to jump down and read what’s next to the picture again, go ahead)

How do we tolerate those who bear no fruit at all, or worse bear fruit that is bitter and leaves a nasty taste in our mouths? HOW?!
JESUS
Get to know Him
Let Him in
Let Him change our nature
Keep our eyes on HIM;not our pastor, ourselves, some group leader

While we were still sinners, in our darkest most unfaithful and ugly

position, Christ loved and died for us. All humans. HE forgave so also we pray, “Father forgive us as we forgive those who sin against us. For me it is sometimes easier to love the dirty sinner on the street corner or in some political office who is not yet a believer and not bearing the name of Christ but oh how hard it is to love a church member who just gets under my skin so much i want to scream. You may know some who are actually working against everything Christ stands for; but ya know what, with Christ’s help and the renewed nature the Holy Spirit gives me i can and will and look forward to that day or harvest.
Let Him slay the giant (1 stone, 1 throw, 1 dead giant).
Let Him deal with the several headed dragon. I am going to stop throwing stones at people who are in my army. The lil’ boy David didn’t agree with those in the same Army he was in but didn’t use his sling shot against them. He only hurled that stone toward the real enemy. Remember who the real enemy is and bring to heart the battle is the Lord’s, not ours.

May i be faithful, even so Lord Jesus in Your name and for Your sake. AMEN

I wrote this the way i read…i read a little and skim down the page and when i see a picture i read what is next to that pic. and sometimes i just read the bold words or the little red words (red letters) and just the quotes catch my eye.
i hope you enjoyed it and The Holy Spirit speaks to you through His words…more importantly i pray, “May the words of my mouth and those i type and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in GOD’S sight. In the name of my Lord Jesus Christ, Amen
Accepting a person who you see as a Barabbas type character (a faith killer) could make all the difference in your faith as well as in the faith of others. Go to: SERMON JAM -SEE TRUE ACCEPTANCE to be reminded of how Jesus accepted Barabbas.
It is easier to do something when you see it done. If you can see Jesus doing it and ask His Spirit to live in you, you can do it too.
Move on, go on in your faith.

  1. Steve Simms, my new on-line friend (for we have never met in life yet) has a great blog and most of his blogs are all about what “Church” can and should be, THE BODY OF CHRIST. I encourage you to dive deeper into his post if the Holy Spirit is speaking to you and you’re carrying this same burden. Steve Simms Blog, it sure helped set me on fire and keep the fire going, no wet blanket on the fire of the Holy Spirit and it gave me a fresh look at what church can be We follow a similar format in our Sunday night meetings (Take a Virtual tour on our FB).

  2. Some are getting their praise now, just from man for their good works but i look forward to far greater things i do for God in private. Knowing that if i am a God pleaser it is much better than being a man pleaser. And if i am truly focused on pleasing God and someone who claims to be Godly is bothered by me they have to take that up with God, not me. If they come to me and play judge and jury i need to ignore that and not let it sway me or toss me like a wave on the ocean. Remember what Jesus said to the pharisees about what, why and how they did things. (Mt. 6)

Plank eye, not just a great band and band name but a lesson:

I hope this is a fresh look at what Jesus says, maybe you don’t get his sarcasm.

Brothers and Sister in Christ do not be so easily offended, for sure you may hear the words you read in His Holy word differently but think about the meaning. Realize Jesus was very sarcastic at times, he talks about how the Pharisees would strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. Picture that, but HE SAYS it to us too so that we will not be pharisaical but more like Jesus and yet let HIM be the ultimate judge of all things.

Leave go of the nip picking, and don’t let other’s nit picking bother or affect you.

Listen to what God is saying regardless of who is saying it. Don’t look at the container, look at The Sustainer (God).

Has God ever used a donkey as a mode of transporting important information to you?

How about a jackass? HE HAS BEFORE, HE CAN AND WILL AGAIN.

  3. Part of Acceptance:

” I was always able to see the flaw in every person, every situation. And I was always glad to point it out, because I knew you wanted perfection, just as I did. Acceptance has taught me that there is a bit of good in the worst of us and a bit of bad in the best of us; that we are all children of God and we each have a right to be here.” -from Alcoholics Anonymous pg. 417.

The sinning saint (believer) who should know better can sit next to the sinning sinner who knows no better and i should be okay with that.

As long as i keep my eyes fixed on Jesus, i’ll be able to be in that same sanctuary every Sunday because if i judge them and say, “they should be more like Jesus” I am not being Christ like i am trying to be Christ himself, THE ONLY TRUE JUDGE.

After all i am a sinner saved by grace trying moment by moment and only by His Grace and Mercy learning to live free from sin.

    EYES OF AMBITION

Bible Study, “FIX YOUR EYES ON JESUS”

Prayer, “I know you, Lord want perfection, just as I do. Help me to personally be like you but remember YOU are the Lord, You are the judge, not me. You are the perfector. Help me to let you do your job and i will do mine, not be a fruit inspector of other people’s fruit but bear the fruit of Your Spirit in my life, in Jesus Name, remembering HE>i amen”.

  6. I am learning to keep my mouth shut, accept others more and to let my actions speak louder than any words i may utter.
True, sometimes God’s people should be seen and not heard and how we act is what is going to show the world what The Body f Christ is all about so no more siting at lunch after a Sunday Morning service and letting people over hear us talk about the hassles of church because we won’t talk about it (gossip)

Here are some songs that help me practice what i preach and what
The Gospel tells me to do:
This song i put on repeat and let the words sink in my head because i know part of my problem with accepting others is realizing i am accepts and the reality that i am accepted by the one who matters most. I worry too much about be accepted and pleasing others.

The Band Petra was a major influence and their lyrics are all so based on Scripture, every song and they hit the nail on the head in driving home the point that Jesus died, rose and He is coming back (Salvation to all and Holiness, sanctification to all believers)
The believer who is some how a sinning saint will sit next to the sinner from the street and i will sit with them as a sinner saved by grace that must continue to remember HE loved me at my darkest moment and still does. And when i judge others HE will correct my, fix me and set me right again:

WE ARE ALL HIS CHILDREN, are some disobedient children? Yes and i am disobedient if i get caught up in judging others regardless of what i may expect and maybe should try to hold anyone else to.
Here are a few Petra songs that feed me and help me keep the right perspective:

    “All The King’s Horses” lyrics
He’s going to put this world back together again:
It’s an age-old score that’s got to be settled
It’s an age-old debt that’s got to be paid
When the King breaks through in all of His glory
To claim His throne and the world that He made
The nations wait with their armies gathered
With Jerusalem firmly under their thumbs
There will be no peace in Armageddon valley
Till the trumpet sounds and the cavalry comes
When He arrives He will conquer them all
Take back the ground given after the fall

    (Coro)
All the King’s horses and all the King’s men
Gonna ride down from heaven from where they’ve been
All the King’s horses and all the King’s men
Gonna put this world back together again
Gonna put this world back together

On a great white horse the King will come riding
He’s the One they call Faithful and True
With His eyes of fire and blood dipped clothing
He had a name nobody else knew

And by His side ride the armies of heaven
Dressed in linen clean and white as the snow
Riding down to earth with a vengeance so holy
For a one-day battle that will trample their foe
And when the dust and the smoke disappears
The King will reign for a thousand years

When the lion lays down with the lamb
There’ll be peace in the land of Abraham
They will beat their swords into plows
When every tongue declares and every knee bows

I must not let my heart become, cold, bitter or hardened. Here is a prayer by Petra:

So i RISE! not against people who claim to be in His Army of Salvation or in this same war against sin and destruction but against the enemy. I resie not as a rebel but FOR & IN Jesus name:

SICK OF IT by Skillet from the Project called :”RISE” which was a concept Album and this points out, the real fight isn’t against each other, it is not against anyone who is made of flesh and blood the real fight is against Spiritual forces we can not see but that grab a hold of us and try to choke us out. if your sick of it raise your hand, listen to this and decide what your going to do. Where will you put your focus, on who is not serving God as YOU think they should or on fighting the real battle God calls us to Fight:

Found this on Youtube by Breana Rae, she writes, “Jen talks about her artwork and how it ties in with the concept idea behind RISE, and how she’s actually terrified of her drum riser! Sorry about the crazy movement in the beginning, I had to adjust my chair”
If your going to watch this video turn it down, who ever was filming forgot their verbal zeal would blast out the viewers ears WOOOOW!:

  7. want to place a picture here that is important to keep in mind, even as we accept others, but not sure how.
    Picture says
“Church is a hospital for sinners not a museum for saint”

I am not all about bashing the Church or religion but i am about making sure we stop living lukewarm lives and being cold causal Christians in this world that needs to see Jesus. May they see Him in us, in me.
Here is just an audio from Eddy Degarmo and Danna Key

    Here is song Causal Christian

May want to watch and consider this as well... eat up, get feeding and grow Spiritually:

Once again thank you Tom I really enjoy reading your blog! I have been thru a couple of churches that has left me scratching my head. Yes the bitterness came and the hurt, but God was and is always there. These things have always driven me closer to God because, frankly, I want answers about myself, I want to please Him. I agree where two or three are gathered, He is in the midst. Just when I think I have read all your blogs I find more. I am not online much anymore. It’s kinda funny, no job and no school and I haven’t much time because I love the Word, I read it and eat it. It is our daily bread, lol. I got a small glimpse of we can, it is possible, through Christ, to live righteously. Wow, I know I have read it, heard it, but when you get a revelation that’s like fire works. Oh well, I am rambling now. Thanks for you blogs Tom.

For the 1st time in my life God is really working on getting me (changing me) in the area of truly accepting other people. It is easy to accept sinners, not so easy to accept saints living like sinners and i realize ironically i am suppose to KICK against that but at the same time i am suppose to STOP kickin’ and let Jesus handle it. I am finding myself in a real oxymoronic state but the confusion is fading and Christ is helping me see and understand, apply and live pleasing to HIM with much less of a pain in the neck. Slowly but surely thorn in my side is not hurting so much any more.

Living for Him and focusing on HIM.

Do my best pray that it is blessed and He’ll take care of the rest https://youtu.be/Vhxzwp6h_TI Keith Green Song “He’ll take care of the rest”

  15. The Holy Spirit spoke to me through Matt. 13 to really help weed my garden and remove some rocks and any bitterness that is trying to take root….

Mt. 13 starting around verse 42 talks about some of those weeds, ” thistles” Thorns in the rose garden i was never promised. The Bible says….They (the true pricks, thistles, thorns) are going to complain to high heaven, but nobody is going to listen. 43 At the same time, ripe, holy lives will mature and adorn the kingdom of their Father. “Are you listening to this? Really listening?

back up to Mt. 13:40 “The picture of thistles pulled up and burned is a scene from the final act. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, weed out the thistles from his kingdom, 42 pitch them in the trash, and be done with them. (SWIPE LEFT!) but note who’s job that is to do the harvesting and the final shifting… CHRIST, The God of Angel’s Army and HIS Angels, not us humans, still dealing with our own “earth suit issues” https://tombeetlebailey.wordpress.com/2015/11/24/earth-suits/
I am learning to say to myself, “that’s not my job man!” and focus on doing that i am urged to do.

If the shoe fits, wear it and i am now just wearing my own shoes, not comparing other’s shoes and how nice or dirty or shiny they are, just focusing on wearing my own two shoes! https://tombeetlebailey.wordpress.com/2015/11/23/free-shoe-giveaway-acquire-inquire-within-our-souls/

Walking on, fully appreciating prayer and prayers put into action by other encouraging believers.

I put this same comment under the “HOW TO kick against the pricks”post because The Holy Spirit really spoke to my heart when i’ve read through Matt. 13. He really helped weed my garden and remove some rocks and any bitterness that is trying to take root…. ONE DAY I REALIZED WEEDS AROUND A SAPLING ARE NOT GOOD FOR IT BUT THAT TREE IS GROWING AND MATURING AND THE WEEDS MIXED WITH GRASS WON’T BE ABLE TO CHOKE IT OUT THE MORE MATURE IT GETS.

IT TAKES SOME MANURE TO GET PLANTS TO GROW, TOO MUCH MANURE WILL STUNT ITS GROWTH OR EVEN KILL IT.

I guess it is up to us to decide what environment we grow best in and avoid environments with NO sun, not shade or shadows… hmmmm God knows exactly how much of what is needed and as long as HE is the source and i keep my focus on HIM and depend fully on Him i think i am going to be o.k. and continue to grow as He wants, sad that it may not be what friends, family, or others want but when it comes down to it when i go to meet my maker i want HIM so say HE is pleased and that is all that really matters. Lord Jesus help me to swipe left on everything else that truly does not matter!

  20. The lyrics to this song to me are saying those ministers or Christians who are doing their thing for God for their own benefit, maybe for the money or for the thrill or maybe as fire insurance (thinking that duty will save them from Hell) are out there and we know it, we’ve seen it….

    THAT WE SHOULD KICK AGAINST

We would be a rebel for God!

We should be like Dog’s of Peace, just leading people to the good shepherd (Jn. 10). Pastors are there for that, but they are human and if they, for whatever reason, are not letting Christ call out to them how to be a good sheep dog or peaceful “dog of peace” they may nip a little too hard at the sheep, they could even be more like a wolf dog than a dog of peace and end up doing some damage to the sheep.

“Dogs Of Peace” Track 04 from the album {Speak} by Dogs Of Peace. (full credits on Youtube)

    SO WHAT DO WE DO?

We kick! But that doesn’t mean we approach some brother or sister in Christ or a church leader with some type of self righteous cruelty. Maybe you’ve been hurt by people that do that. You go to them in love, the scripture is clear. I will find the passages and post them for easy access but you may already know them. i will even post a link so you can read them here by clicking on the link and it taking you RIGHT TO WHAT GOD SAYS to do in His word but 1st let me say,

i believe The Holy Spirit has the power to come in right now. Come into your life, not exactly like a puppet on a string but in a metaphorical way like a hand puppet. You live live in a box, i do. People put me in a box all the time.

Society runs on everyone being in their box but occasionally someone gets full of themselves and gets out of the box and raises wholly hell OR

God can put His hands on and in you. Then when you are out of the box, trusting and acknowledging Him as your righteousness, nothing right within you your self, it is all Him, Him filling you and over flowing trough you. Then He can raise up His Holiness. He can speak through you and move you to touch others.

What a beautiful life we can live huh?

When we realize everything is as God is allowing. The good the bad the ugly and we ask for His help, His Wisdom (James 4, PRov. 1) We surrender and accept it, not just say or ask but really ask and accept it. WOW!

I need to just stop for now and soak that in myself.
GOD IS SO GOOD! ALL THE TIME GOD IS GOD.

LINK to the word of God re: going to a leader who seems to be ungodly or not being Christ-like in what they do:

here is part of James 4:7-19 verse 9 Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. 11 Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you. 12 God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge. He alone has the power to save or to destroy. So what right do you have to judge your neighbor?

There are plenty more Holy Scripture verses, studies and passages on how to approach them and that we are to approach them and we are to 1st take the plank out of our own eye THEN assist others with the little things but may we let God be God and let The Holy Spirit do HIS job.

Do not associate with those who are not Christ-like who say they are if they are drowning you, other wise you better associate with them to love them and forgive them like Christ forgave you, while i was still a sinner HE loved me so also i need to love and ACCEPT and forgive even the priest, Sunday School Teacher and elderly Church lady who excrete bitterness that doesn’t come from God’s character and Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit doesn’t bear bitter fruit.

Some Christians do bear bitter fruit and it puts a bad taste in your mouth, if you know what i mean you’ve tested and seen. Christ’s sweet nectar is so much better the fruit of the Holy Spirit are so good. Not the fruitS, the FRUIT (no “s) and no b.s. in there. When The Holy Spirit fills us and we keep our lives KEEP THE KEY, keep our lives filled and keep filling our lives with HIM and things of HIM and less of us, the news, less of even other things that are good, not evil in nature but can take PRIORITY over Him that is when we too become bitter.

i, no wait, let me capitalize that “I” have tasted and seen the bitter fruit from people that are in the family of God, they are “Christians” who are not Christ-like – it happens. THAT makes me bitter, if i let it. and “I” even say, “they made me do it Lord!” They made me bitter? “I” let them make me bitter. Rather than forgive them as the Father forgives me.
