Bigger Moving Picture -Witch Hunt

550114_4101049960679_949372271_nHow quick we are to judge others.

1st Corinthians 4:5 says, “So don’t make judgments about anyone ahead of time—before the Lord returns. For he will bring our darkest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. Then God will give to each one whatever praise is due.”

I think this is a real problem with those who are in church bearing the name Christian, which should mean “Christ-like” but who think they are Christ Himself and that they are the ones with the right to say who is right, who is wrong, who is accepted and who should be rejected.

I am all for standing by our doctrines and standing by the word of God and not letting anyone distort it and try to persuade us other wise.

I am all for reaching those who are lost, wayward and need direction to The Way, The Truth and The Life.

I just feel like all to often we are putting others down rather than giving them a hand up. When i read bumper stickers that say, “God save us from your children.”  I realize we, the body of Christ are maybe known more for what we are against, not what we stand for.

How can i keep this post fairly short? Let me just simply say,

“I am having to focus on myself and my relationship with Christ, and hope others are not tripping over the splinters coming from the log that is in my own eye. And when i do that i notice others want the truth, peace, joy and relationship I have with Christ. A relationship not a religion in which i am trying to persuade or convince others to join.”

So consider with me if you will some of the lyrics from this song “Witch Hunt”. The first part musically and lyrically paints the picture or an angry mod of people who are after someone who was even just a little different and they are dead set on finding them and destroying them (not reaching them to try to help them or consider how they may need to be shown a better way).

Then we get to the lyrics, “those who know what’s best for us must rise and save us from ourselves.”

– without going into a rant and rage i am just going to say, i personally feel and have felt for sometime that too many “Christians” think THEY are the ones to save others, rather than depending on The power of The Holy Spirit and God’s saving Grace and miraculous work that stats deep in someones heart when we simply plant a seed and another person waters it.

It is so hard to believe that we have gone through times in history where people would literally kill anyone who did not believe according to how they believed. Here in St. Augustine, FL i cringe every time i hear that those who pledged to the Catholic faith were killing those who pledged to the Protestant faith if they would not convert to the Catholic faith. WHAT?! Yes, you all know it is true, those who believed in the same power and saving Grace of the same Christ – The very same Son Of God, killing each other.

more lyrics:

“Quick to judge quick to anger slow to understand

ignorance and prejudice and fear walk hand in hand…”

Those who are truly Christians, may this be a plea, as it has been through Scripture; “understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires. So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.” (James 1:19-21)

This song deals with fear, persecution and the public rush to judgment that has historically occurred. I took this rendition from the youtube channel “Still Kickin” -they did an amazing job setting this powerful song into a visual format.

I hope that YOU, my friends, will not be going on any “Witch Hunts”

What is in a sermon title?

The THOMPSON CHAIN REFERENCE BIBLE has a Chain topic (#1672) of “Family Bible Readings” that go well with another post i did a while back (Unusual Things In the Bible).

I think these Bible Story names or titles alone will spark interest.

For example:
“The woman who prayed with her fingers” (Mt. 9:20-22)
“Mr. Selfishness, Mr. Curiosity, Mr. Kind-hearted” (Lk 10:30-37)
“The Eating and Drinking Contest” (Dan. 1:3-15) This one could even read like a front page newspaper headline “Eating Contest Won By 4 Men”
“The Man Lions Would Not Eat” (Dan. 6:1-22)
“3 Fish Stories” (Jn. 1:1-17; 2:1-10; Lk. 5:4-8; Jn. 21:4-11)
“5 girls, out in the cold” (Mt. 25:1-13)
“38 years by the poolside” (Jn. 5:1-9)
“The Fatal Lie” or “Can A Lie Kill You?” (Ac. 5:1-10)

Please let me know if this sparked a sermon for you or a special story time for you and your children, i’d love to hear about it! Reply or comment below.

Bigger Moving Picture -Camera Eye

“With the 1981 release of Rush’s Moving Pictures album, “The Camera Eye” took us on a musical journey across the Atlantic in the bands unique lyrical and musical style. The song tangibly describes New York and London; The long held subjects of story, fantasy and lore along with the qualities that energize these magical cities.” (from Still Kickin youtube channel)

What do you see in your city?

Do you see the people you pass by and that pass by you? Do you just look beyond their need, their call for friendship?

Here is another good song and an explanation of where, why who wrote it:

“Bluetree” was the band that original wrote the song, “God Of This City” here is their version:

Let Christ become your Lord, you’ll never regret building a relationship with Him and if you have this relationship, share it with YOUR city.

What mode of transportation do you use to convey the good news (The Gospel of Jesus Christ)?

Tell me how your going to do this (leave a reply/comment below)

Bigger Moving Picture -Natural Science

“Living in their pools they soon forget about the Sea”…

I recall as a pre-teen a friend of mine explaining the deeper meaning behind lyrics from the philosophical songs of the Progressive rock band RUSH.

This song, “Natural Science” has some lines in it that really caused me to ponder somethings and see some parallels, object lessons if you will.

In the beginning of the song note this lyric:

I: Tide Pools

When the ebbing tide retreats
Along the rocky shoreline
It leaves a trail of tidal pools
In a short-lived galaxy
Each microcosmic planet
A complete society

A simple kind mirror
To reflect upon our own
All the busy little creatures
Chasing out their destinies
Living in their pools
They soon forget about the sea…

I’ve reflected on this. Much like these busy little creatures who live in their own little pool, so also we are in our own little world, our own subdivision, our own  city, state, country. We are even divided up into counties, we focus on ‘our area’, our local neighborhood. And we should, however, let us not forget there is a whole world out there. Let us also not forget that even within those we come into contact with each day there are those who are lost, as once were we.

Don’t forget about the Sea from which you came.

Don’t be asleep in the light.

Get back out into the world around you. No longer just meet with those you love. Go and love the unlovable as Christ has loved you.

Some people use music to show their love. Some people write. Some preach on the corner. Some visit the sick. What mode of transportation will you use to spread the good news, the Gospel of Jesus Christ?

Dream – A Mode of Transportation

jacobs-ladder-cati-simon

When talking about the dream Jacob had as recorded in Genesis 28:10-27, one person replied that as a kid they always thought,

That is what happens when you use a rock for a pillow!” (Gen. 28:11)

It wasn’t:

  • It wasn’t the stone that brought on this dream.
  • It wasn’t the fatigue of traveling so far.
  • It wan’t fear from being chased by a brother (Gen. 27:41)

It was God;

  • Allowing Jacob to see that there is a connection between heaven and earth.
  • It was a way to show that God seeks us out for a relationship with Him
  • It was a revelation of a highway of angels descending and ascending.

This dream was a mode God was using to transport information to this man Jacob. It was a  ‘mode of transportation!’

In this short post i don’t want to focus on; the nap/ much needed sleep, the stone, the ladder, highway, stairway, but on the dream.

Since Adam and Eve God has made a connection, a way of communication, a relationship that is to be built, cherished and developed.

What mode of transportation does God use to speak to you? A dream? A Walk? A Climb? A Friend? A Church meeting? An object lesson? Pain? Sorrow? Fear? Solitude? Crowds?

I am listening to His word and feeling His nudge to my heart.

Are you? please leave a reply.

That is also where i gather with other believers (my church).

It the video below i noted this comment, “A Jacob’s Ladder is the type of high voltage “climbing arc” display seen in many old (and usually bad) Sci-Fi movies. Jacob’s Ladder come in all shapes, styles, and sizes. Nature has it’s own version.”

For those who know God and have developed or are developing a personal relationship with his through Christ we see things differently than the world does.

Holy Spirit, Lead Our Meeting

11140281_919055714800440_7200876093071441459_nAs we gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing sometimes people want to participate but just aren’t sure how.

The following Scriptures I am going to print and cut out into strips then pass out Sunday night to people at the gathering.

Each person can read the Scripture out loud to the group, then answer the questions. It is my hope and prayer that the Scriptures and the question will encourage them to participate; rather than me giving a sermon or even a short devotional with everyone sitting to listen. Each person will have the opportunity to take an active part.

Here are the Scriptures and stirring questions (if the one reading the scripture has another point or wants to share something unrelated, remember that is fine, trust the Holy Spirit to lead and even take over). Try to allow everyone time to participate and not let one person take up all the time but again, if this happens and you’re praying and letting The Holy Spirit lead your time together will be blessed by HIM and what He does and says through each person at your gathering:

Galatians 5:22-26 NLT

22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.

25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.

26 Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.

Q: How is bearing fruit different than doing things for God?

John 14:16 NLT

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.

NIV: 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—

Q: according to this scripture what is the job of The Holy spirit?

Q: How does the Spirit Counsel you or work as an advocate for you?

Romans 8:26 NKJV

26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Q: According to this scripture, when we don’t know how to pray what does the Holy spirit do?

Q: Has there ever been a time when you didn’t know what to pray, if so, what did you do?

1 John 2:27 NAS

27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.

Q: According to this Scripture, who teaches us?

Q: What do you know now that you didn’t know before you accepted Christ?

1 Corinthians 3:16 NIV

16 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?

Q: According to this Scripture, what is God’s temple?

Q: How do you care for His temple?

Romans 8:9 NIV

9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

Q: According to this Scripture, who controls those filled with The Holy Spirit?

Q: How is your nature changed by The Spirit of God living in you?

John 14:17 NLT

17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

Q: According to this Scripture where will the Spirit be?

Q: How does having The Holy Spirit in you effect you?

Acts 2:3 NLT

3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them.

Q: According to this account in Scripture, how did the Holy Spirit appear?

Q: Can you identify with this fire?

Acts 8:17 NIV

17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Q: What did Peter and John do as recorded here in this Scripture?

Q: Has anyone ever laid hands on you and prayed for you?

(May lay hands on the person reading this now and pray for The Holy Spirit to FILL them).

Acts 19:6-7 NIV

6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

7 There were about twelve men in all.

Q: What happen when Paul laid hands on those mentioned in this Scripture?

Q: Have you ever heard anyone speak in tongues?

Q: How many people were gathered here in this documentation of Scripture?

Calling on The Holy Spirit to inspire and spur people into action, may God’s presence enter each place (location) we gather at; more importantly may He enter into the hearts of each one of us so that we find inspiration and encouragement from Him and through Sharing His presence in our lives with others.

It is amazing how we grow when we share our faith with each other and others. Give your faith away and you’ll get even more.

This means WAR

IFD14-Final_2015This post was inspired from my son Alexx’s blog Marching As To War and i quote,

“We’re coming into a time in which one needs to be able to get knee deep in scum without flinching at the knife in their ribs, they need to show no fear in their eye with a gun down their throat and still be able to preach through the bullets.”

My son’s whole post set me on fire but especially those few words. This made me ask a few questions to myself,  perhaps you can ask yourself, fellow Christian, these same questions:

Are you ready to live for Christ?

Are you ready to die for Him?

Do they (those around you) know you are a Christian?

Do they know because you are like Christ in the way you live?

If threatened because of your faith would you hold your ground?

Are you willing to let Jesus, His characteristics, shine through you to the point that others notice, your not like those of this world?

12122860_920588014672974_5148360240087964713_n

One more question came to my mind and i asked myself,

What am i wearing?

I am trying to be clothed in His righteousness rather than thick headed self righteousness. He>i<Him! (John 3:30).

I hope the few lines from my son’s blog post, let alone his whole post Marching As To War,  is as inspiring to you as it is to me.

He Makes Me Lie Down

10478683_10202795300859695_5856278954962626708_n1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters.
3 He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake.
4 Eventhough I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; My cup overflows.
6 Surely goodness and loving kindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Psalm 23, often heard at a funeral but is really for those who are still alive. For those who need and want a Shepherd. This Psalm is for you.

For me, i noted God’s Part vs. our part.

Note some key words in the 1st 3 verses  that are all God’s doing, His job, His care, GOD’S PART:
Psalm 23:1-3
  • Shepherd,
  • Makes me lie down,
  • Leads,
  • Restores,
  • Guides.

Now Note the next 3 verses God’s part Psalm 23:4-6:

  • With us
  • Rod and staff (form of defense,  guiding and discipline (know the rod is to defend sheep from wolves & staff is shepherd’s crook to keep us from cliff, guide us in right direction & keep us under His care)
  • Comfort,
  • Prepare,
  • Anoint-er,
  • Overfills (complete satisfaction),
  • Gives goodness
  • Gives loving kindness
  • Follows us to the end
  • Provides an eternal home

What is our part in this relationship with our Shepherd?

Look at the first 3 verses of Psalm 23:1-3

  • Not wanting,
  • Laying down in a comfortable spot,
  • Led,
  • Quench of thirst,
  • Restored,
  • Guided.

Now the last 3 verses, Psalm 23:4-6 our part:

  • Walk,
  • No fear,
  • Comforted by comforter,
  • Peace at the feast (able to eat in front of worse enemy),
  • Anointed by the anoint er,
  • Cup overflows (totally satisfied) like in verse 1 (no want),
  • Being followed by His goodness,
  • Being followed by His loving kindness,
  • Followed all the time,
  • Have an eternal dwelling/home (John 14:1-3)
My prayer, “Lord even as a leader, a program coordinator, Your child, help me let You lead. Help me STOP when you tell me to, In the name of The Lord Jesus Christ and for His sake. Amen”

Pressing On,

Tom “Beetle” Bailey
