Unusual things in the Bible

Message- Tom Jones’ Song “It’s Not Unusual” Source: Open Bible NAS Page 1228)
Songs: “His Love Remains The Same” (Ysb #17) “Jesus Never Fails (Ysb #61) “He’s The Same Today” (Red Song book Chorus#163)
Things you may not have learned in Sunday School as a kid:
Man walked naked for 3 years (Is. 20:2,3)
Woman boiled and ate her son (2nd Ki. 6:29)
Interesting, unusual and strange, out of the ordinary things, EXTRAordinary:
Battles/Unusual Wars:
Battle won because man stretched out his hand (Ex. 17:11)
Army of 185,000 destroyed in one night (Is. 37:36)
An army with 700 left handed men (Judge. 20:16)
Woman killed a man by driving a tent peg through his head (Judg. 4:17-21)
Physical abnormalities:
Man lived 969 years (Ge. 5:27)
Sons of God married daughters of men (Ge. 6:2)
Baby had a scarlet thread tied around its hand before it was born (Ge. 38:28,29)
Women who had to shave their heads before they could marry (Duet. 21:11-13)
Man whose hair weighed about 6 2/3 lbs when it was cut annually (2nd Sam. 14:26)
Man who had 12 fingers and 12 toes (2nd Sam . 22:20)
Man had 700 wives and 300 concubines (1st Ki. 11:3)
Father who had 88 children (2nd Chr. 11:21)
A man whose life was increased by 15 years because he prayed (Is. 38:1-5)
Man spoke to by a donkey (Num. 22:28-30)
Coin from a fishes mouth ( Mt. 17:24-27)
Man swallowed by a fish, and lives (Jonah 1:17; 2:10; 3:1-3)
Graveyard full of dead bones resurrected (Ezek. 37)
Sun stood still for a whole day (Josh. 10:13)
The Sun travel backwards (Is. 38:8)
The axe that floated in water (2nd Ki. 6:1-6)
Man who thought everything was fine realizes He was trapped in a mental and spiritual prison cell and needed to be freed just as much as someone who was addicted to crack.
Because of sin (Post Gen. 3, Doc 5, world) we are all going to the same hell regardless of the level, frequency or disabling ability of our wrongs. We are SAVED from that same HELL by God’s grace when we simple ask, receive, let Him change us (make us white as snow).
THAT IS WHAT’S UNUSUAL, realizing we need to be saved and have a relationship with Him.
We are strangers, we are a peculiar people, we are aliens. God’s arm is not too short to reach us and come inside and make a difference.
We are a possessed –Song: “To Be Like Jesus” Chorus #107
I hear your getting into The Word, it the Word getting into you?
Walk in the Spirit (Gal. 5:16) and BEAR FRUIT (Gal. 5:13-25)
Now think about God’s unusual power:
Many raised from the dead when Christ raised (Mt. 27:52-53)
Dead in Christ rising from the dead then those who remain joining them in the air (!st Thess. 4:16-17).
Reconsider Tom Jones song, “It’s Not Unusual To Be Loved By You” Think about God’s Love and ability and realize for God it is not unusual for Him to love someone right where there are, sin and all and love us enough to make us guilt, pain and sin free so that we too can be unusual to everyone around us and the world and do unusual things. Mt. 5:16 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
Acts 4:13 …”recognized they had been with Jesus”
Eccl. 11:5 and Is. 55 (We cannot fully understand God’s ways, or know God’s ways YET he wants to have a personal relationship with Him.
God Knows us Jer. 29:11 and Ps. 139
God wants us to know Him…
Mt. 11:28-30 “Come to me…”
Rev. 3:20 “Behold I stand at the door and knock…”
Benediction … Eph. 3:20-21 “Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is ay work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen”.

  1. Note to self and anyone else who may be able to use this. The THOMPSON CHAIN REFERENCE BIBLE has a Chain topic (#1672) of “Family Bible Readings” that go well with this post. The Bible Story names or titles alone spark interest.

    For example:
“The woman who prayed with her fingers” (Mt. 9:20-22)
“Mr. Selfishness, Mr. Curiosity, Mr. Kind-hearted” (Lk 10:30-37)
“The Eating and Drinking Contest” (Dan. 1:3-15) This one could even read like a front page newspaper headline “Eating Contest Won By 4 Men”
“The Man Lions Would Not Eat” (Dan. 6:1-22)
    “3 Fish Stories” (Jn. 1:1-17; 2:1-10; Lk. 5:4-8; Jn. 21:4-11)
“5 girls, out in the cold” (Mt. 25:1-13)
“38 years by the poolside” (Jn. 5:1-9)
“The Fatal Lie” or “Can A Lie Kill You?” (Ac. 5:1-10)

Please let me know if this sparked a sermon for you or a special story time for you and your children, i’d love to hear about it!
